The Rev. Urban Leopold Knowles, the sixth child of the late Mr. & Mrs. Hubert Knowles, was born at Morrises, Long Island on the 25 th of June, 1927. He accepted the Lord in 1944 under the preaching of Rev. Charles Rahming.

He felt the call of God on his life and was ordained to the Sacred Gospel Ministry, and installed as Pastor of Buelah Union Baptist Church, Simms’, Long Island on the 3rd of April, 1968, by the late Rev. Enoch Backford Sr., Superintendent, and the late Rev. Dr. L. D. Cox, Assistant Superintendent respectively, of the Bahamas Baptist Union. On that very day, he was appointed District Minister for the four churches in North Long Island, namely, Beulah in Simms, Salem in Millars, St. John’s in McKanns and Gethsemane in Burnt Ground.

Much of the work done to the Beulah Baptist Church can accredit to the commitment that Pastor Urban Knowles had to the work of carrying the Gospel of the Kingdom.

He has kept the four churches as a cohesive group. He has also served faithfully as President of the Long Island District for many long years. Twelve years ago, he was made the 3 rd Assistant Superintendent of the Bahamas Baptist Union and has travelled extensively to all the conferences and District Conventions.

Rev. Knowles served faithfully in other civic organizations. For twenty-two years, he served as President of the United Burial Society and for twenty-five years as Exalted Ruler of Pride of Simms’ Lodge of the Elks Association.
